The Science: Body, Mind & Spirit Connection

For hundreds of years Holistic Medicine has recognized the complex interrelationship of between our minds and bodies. If you have ever felt your heart rate increase, a tension headache, or a rush of adrenaline in response to stress; you have experienced how our minds affect our bodies. Simultaneously, what we do with our physical body (what we eat, how much we exercise, even our posture) impacts our mental state & our reaction to stressful circumstances that may arise. Researchers are discovering that attitudes and emotions (the “mind”) can also contribute to heart disease and other physical health challenges (the “body”). Achieving and maintaining optimal health & wellness requires a comprehensive approach addressing the Body, Mind & Spirit.

Understanding the Power of the Mind

The mind is divided into two parts:

  1. Conscious Mind: The conscious mind is the rational logical mind that we are most aware of. It perceives our surroundings and present thoughts. We mistakenly believe that the conscious mind is in charge, and yet it runs very little of our lives. Astonishingly, most of our decisions, actions, emotions and behavior depends on the 95% of brain activity occurring in the unconscious mind.

  2. Unconscious Mind: The unconscious mind stores our memories, beliefs, values, mood, emotions, behaviors, and our perceptions which act as the fundamental roots of our understandings, beliefs, values and our justification for decision making. It processes information, creates, and delivers the actions for the conscious mind & body to complete.

Similar to your cellphone, the Conscious Mind is like the phone itself carrying out the functions, while the Unconscious Mind is the operating system (IOS) running in the background & directing every function the phone completes.

Obstacles to Success

The Unconscious Mind & Body can imprint obstacles/interferences to optimal functioning from:

  • Positive and negative life experiences,

  • the actions or speech of others,

  • challenges of our personality type,

  • stress

  • avoiding needed resets/updates

Like a glitch or “bug” in your phone’s IOS, these interferences cause the unconscious mind to send instructions to the other parts of your being that are out of alignment with your goal and sabotage the system. The conscious mind & body follow the instructions and take actions that keep us from doing what we know is best for us & instead keep us doing what we know is not healthy for us. We literally create or attract problem situations (even though that is not what we really want).

We try to solve the problem by:

  • Talking ourselves out of it,

  • Making up our conscious mind to “start doing things differently tomorrow”

  • Yelling at or getting frustrated with ourselves doesn’t change anything.

But, it doesn’t change anything and actually leaves us feeling even worse! In addition to causing self sabotage & struggle, the lack of ease from trauma & stress (often referred to as dis-ease) can affect the health of organs and tissue in which they are stored…ultimately resulting in health issues.

Example: An imprinted negative belief of “I’m not good enough” can bring about things like; unhappy marriages, financial instability, and pretty much anything you’re struggling with in your life right now.

So when you find a loving relationship, want to take a risk at a new career, try to implement a nutrition/exercise plan, or step forward with confidence:

  • The Conscious Mind is told to identify evidence, turn the attention toward, & alter the perception of events in a way that supports the person is “not good enough”

  • The Body is told to create anxiety, fear, anger, hurt, etc. to stop you whenever there is an opportunity to challenge/disprove the belief

  • The Conscious mind is then instructed to take actions that will make the negative emotions go away (usually some variation of fight, flight or freeze)

  • The Unconscious Mind then uses the “failure” as proof that the negative belief is true and accurate.

  • The Unconscious Mind continues with the supported belief and applies it to every circumstance moving forward that the person is “not good enough”

  • The stress of it all can leads to feeling tired, unmotivated & depressed

But we can remove that negative belief & replace it with a belief that benefits you!
